In each beehive approximately 20,000 worker bees live in the hive tending to the needs of the queen bee during her gestation period. 

As worker bees leave the hive and return, they gather pollen and return to the queen bee and secrete a creamy liquid (Royal Jelly) through their pharynx for the nutrition of the queen bee's larvae. These worker bees work tirelessly to provide one single queen bee Royal Jelly (its only food source) during the critical days of ovary development and the laying of its eggs.

Royal Jelly is collected from each queen bee's nest when the queen larvae are about four days old. Only in the queen cells of the hive is the harvest of Royal Jelly practical and, therefore, costly to gather.
